INFORMATION & POLICIES FOR STUDY

SCHEDULING:

The acceptance of ongoing private students is based on an initial interview to determine goals and objectives, combined with a vocal assessment and half-hour lesson. The singer participates in a short discussion of their experience and goals for study, vocal range and function is assessed and discussed, and the focus of a customized vocal program determined. Scheduling and correspondence are handled via email; students should be able to check email regularly.

LESSONS:

Lessons times are scheduled on an individual basis for each singer, pre-determined and confirmed by email. Singers should arrive on time and bring the following: a recording device, sheet music/lyrics in binder, vocal tracks or instrument (if used) and pencil. Please also submit payment by Paypal or bring check or cash to lesson. Rates available on request.

ONLINE LESSONS:

Internet video (or telephone) lessons are a regular part of ongoing study for continuing students. These sessions are paid in advance, and taught via SKYPE or iChat, using high speed Internet connections and web camera.

CANCELLATION:

After the initial assessment, students who commence an ongoing program of instruction are asked to make a commitment to attendance at lessons to guarantee a permanent time slot. The full fee is due for cancelled lessons unless the time can be filled by another singer. A 48-hour (2 day) cancellation notice is required to cancel a private lesson. To cancel lessons with voice teacher, call Claire on the cell 707-616-7798. On rare occasions it is necessary for the teacher to cancel a lesson due to an emergency or performance/teaching requirement. When this happens, as much notice will be given as possible, and the student will not be charged.

COMMITMENT TO PROGRESS:

It is understood that regular practice is recommended to benefit fully from private study. Students are encouraged to practice a minimum of 20 minutes daily (5 days a week is recommended) including techniques: exercises from recorded lessons and songs. Ideally, younger singers are monitored by parent supervision (parents are welcome to attend the lessons, and take notes/ask questions to further student progress. Singers purchase their own sheet music and musical accompaniment and are encouraged to bring guitar or recorded tracks to every lesson.

The specific commitment to study includes the following:

  • Regular communication regarding scheduling and progress via email. (Telephone is used as a back up for cancellation and more detailed conversations.)
  • Keeping contact information current: email, telephone numbers, street address.
  • Taking online lessons when instructor is away from the studio for more than 2 weeks.
  • Advancement may include recommended master classes and workshops with other qualified instructors and style coaches. Claire Yarrington is a Level 4 certified Speech Level Singing instructor.
